View from a room - charcoal and oil pastels

Posted On: Saturday 28th May 2011
Summary: This was the view from a room in our house and as the light faded I outlined the shapes with charcoal pencil and then went into my studio to apply the oil pastels from memory. 12" x 12" board.

oil pastel view from a roomoil pastel and charcoalAfter some poor weather, the skies cleared yesterday evening and I was drawn to the simple shapes outside this window. Painting through a window, with the criss-cross of the window bars is a popular painting motif and I like the idea as much as anyone.

I wanted to be really quick on this one, and with simple shapes and blocks of color, oil pastels were the best medium to us. A burst of fireworks inexplicably appeared over the rooves at one point, so I have put those in. I include a not very good reference photo of the scene although I did not need to use it.
