Punts on the river Cam in Cambridge sketched in gouache and pen
Why not learn to paint in gouache rather than transparent watercolour? If you paint in oil as well, you will find gouache easy since it is basically an opaque medium. Dries quickly and you can draw or pastel over it. This is of punts on the river in Cambridge.

This illustrates how to do a small notebook sketch using pen and spirit markers. It is of rowing eights under Victoria Bridge in Cambridge. A nice way to spend 15 minutes on a sunny day

Digital painting - an outdoor sketch of boats in Cambridge
I "painted" this using my PC notebook yesterday evening on the way back home from a meeting. I'm going to post a video of this on the members page, because it's interesting to see how easy and interesting it is to do digital painting using a software painting programme

Cambridge Sailing Club on the River Cam - a plein air oil sketch
I'm calling this an oil sketch because it was done in about an hour and a half, just about all of it on location. I softened the sky a little back in the studio. Late in the day, spring afternoon, showing the last of the sailing dinghies rounding the mark. 12"x12" oil sketch on canvas

Oil painting of abandoned houses in the hills above Istaliff, Afghanistan
For me this is an unforgettable view in the hills above the war ravaged village of Istaliff. There was no time to paint; we had miles to walk, but it was an opportunity to deliberately exercise my visual memory. I took a photo for details, but really what counts is the memories I carried with me of the view. I started this oil painting much later back in the studio. It's 16"x16"
