Fairhaven Singers practice St John's College Chapel -1
On Saturday I sketched Fairhaven Singers practising for their evening concert in St John's College Chapel. Over the next few days I will post my charcoal sketches

Oil painting sketch, plein air, Little Wilbraham Fen
This is a an oil sketch on board (5"x8") which was painted quickly on location. The aim was to try and capture as simply as possible the fresh feel in the early spring air.

Snow failure
Sometimes I get so enthusiastic and rush out to paint. Like when it snows - which on the whole we don't get a lot of here in Cambridge. I was cold before I even got started on this small oil painting on board using my french easel. But it didn't work out as well as I had hoped

Early spring on the River Cam, Grantchester
With a touch of snow still on the ground, I am thankful now that maybe the last of winter is over. In the summer this is a favourite picnic spot. For me it was an interesting subject for a small oil painting using my pochade box

This is the third of the pastels I sketched at a recent choir practice. I sketched this pastel from the organ loft, looking down on the choir stalls. A heavenly sound wafted up to me as they started to sing......

This is a small watercolour sketch done at one of my favourite location down on the River Cam near Cambridge. Although I completed the watercolour on location, I've included a photograph of the scene so you can see exactly what I was looking at.

Willingham windmill painted in watercolours and gouache
In this watercolour sketch of a windmill my aim was to paint as quickly as possible because my hands were going numb it was so cold. So it was important to capture the essence of the scene knowing I could finish it off back in my warm home studio
