I've used this demonstration of painting a watercolour of Dieppe, France, in September 2011 to draw some comparisons with watercolours I painted there as a beginner painter in 1980.

In 1980 I painted my first watercolours - in France. Thirty plus years later, on holiday in France I am painting a watercolour to compare with those first exciting, faltering steps towards painting,

In this video I paint a small watercolour on location at Dieppe harbour, and on my return to England, dig out some of those really early paintings to make a comparison:
