How to paint fast in oil on location. This painting took just over an hour on location at Milton Country Park. I was painting in oil with my pochade equipment and I have compressed the video down to five minutes.

oil pochade sketch at milton country parkI painted this picture in oils this morning (22 Oct 2011) at Milton Country Park. I've added a speeded up video of the whole painting process, live, compressed down to five minutes.

The point of speeding the video up is to make it easier for you to see the stages of the painting:
  • Blocking in the dark areas to start with
  • Filling in the light areas to cover the canvas
  • Putting more broad colour detail in the shadows
  • Putting more broad colour detail in the highlights
  • Towards the end, making adjustments and putting in some fine detail
But before starting I did this very quick monochrome sketch just to test out where the darks and the lights were:
