A small, quick, pochade oil sketch in King Street, Cambridge, UK

I came out of the art shop in King Street Cambridge late afternoon on Saturday and since I had my pochade box with me, I decided to paint a quick oil sketch. I climbed up a flight of stairs and there was an interesting view seen through the filter of a foreground tree

This small pochade ol sketch was on a thin board 4" x 7". The viewpoint selected itself since there was a wall I could prop my box on whilst I stood to paint. The sun had almost gone down, but rather dramatically lit up the end wall of one of the buildings. This was useful because it served to emphasise the way the rest of the street was in shadow.

I used a very restrained palette - burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow, white and a small touch of cadmium red.
