Fritham Green in the New Forest UK, painted in pastels

spring pastel painting at FrithamOn the last day of my weekend painting break in the New Forest in the UK we had lunch at the Royal Oak in Fritham. I paintied here in watercolours many years ago, when our children were young and we were all on bikes. I wonder if the painting still exists somewhere.

Anyway, many years later and with a lot more experience here I am again but this time focussed on pastels and a view looking into the woodland with the trees still bare brightly lit by the cold, low, sharp sunlight that you get at this time of year.

I had several sheets of pastel paper to choose from  (approx 13"x19") but I was drawn to a purple tinted sheet that I had prepared beforehand with a wash of watercolour (on smooth watercolour paper) followed by a coat of Colourfix fine tooth primer.  As you can see, the underlying colour peeks through the pastel strokes providing a warmth against the otherwise cool greens, and blues
