Fire in the olive grove - Puglia Italy - painted plein air in pastels

Summary: At this time of the year there were many small fires in the olive groves as farmers swept up and burnt the debris under the trees in preparation for the olive harvest. It was a nice plein air subject

lives grove plein air pastelsIt was very hot in this olive grove and the farmer was burning the debris from under the trees in preparation for the olive harvest.

He came over to me as I was painting plein air in pastels and asked me (I surmised since I can't speak Italian) what the ..... I was doing. I eventually got across to him that it was a beautiful subject to paint. He looked at my painting, then up at the scene, and then walked away slowly, shaking his head. I carried on of course, imagining that his thoughts might have included "mad", "Englishman" "sun" and "midday".
