Painting plein air in watercolour at Dieppe harbour - France

Posted On: Thursday 3rd November 2011
Summary: Dieppe has been painted many times by famous painters like Turner and Pissarro. The harbour is almost unrecognisable from then, but there is still much to paint here. I'm painting a watercolour on a small scale on location en plein air.

dieppe watercolourDay 11 of my painting holiday in Normandy, France in 2011, and the next stop is Calais to get the ferry back to England. First though, was lunch next to the harbour at Dieppe. A riot of colour, boats and activity. But I chose a quieter spot to paint in watercolour where I could rest my board against the harbour wall.

The sun in front of me was trying to break through some cloud cover, and by the time I had finished the sun was out and the cloud nearly gone.

This is what I painted, but there's a video to view as well here
